SIGNIFICANCE OF TODAY'S
GREAT (M8.8) EARTHQUAKE
AND RELATED SHOCKS IN THE
CHILE REGION, SO. HEMISPHERE


The great earthquake struck at 1:34 AM EST, about 200 miles southwest of Santiago, or somewhat offshore of Maule, Chile.

A tsunami warning is in effect for neighboring countries of Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica as well as farther-flung Hawaii, Australia, Russia and Pacific nations. A tsunami advisory was issued for the coast of California and an Alaskan coastal area from Kodiak to Attu islands, The Associated Press reported.

Its focus was calculated to be about 21.7 miles (35 km) deep. A number of aftershocks has followed this great quake, but most have not occurred near the focus of the original tremor.  Here is the tectonic summary of the event as given by the USGS.
