Polar Motion Monitor Explanation

Three pole-shift expectation levels, as evidenced by our polar motion animation, are described by the colored squares on the home page:

Pole Shift Status: Normalindicates that the roughly circular path of the Earth's north rotational pole (the Chandler wobble motion) is proceeding within historical limits. We do not expect that the pole will be shifting soon.

Pole Shift Status: Erratic indicates that the polar motion is becoming erratic. The pole is moving within a circle described by historic Chandler-wobble limits, but it is not moving forward on a consistently smooth path. It may temporarily have stopped moving, or it may be moving backward, or it may be moving sideways to its usual path. Yellow implies that there is some level of expectation that the pole might be starting to shift.  You should monitor this website regularly for current pole-position updates, information and analysis.

Polar Motion Status: Shifting indicates that Earth's north rotational pole is moving beyond the historic limits of the path described by Chandler's wobble. There is significant expectation of an accelerating pole shift. You should monitor this website daily for current pole-position updates, information and analysis.
